Description:
This is a nice original World War 1 vintage SMLE No.1 Mk.III* made by the B.S.A. Co. in 1916 complete with an original British military sling and 1907 Pattern bayonet (no scabbard).  It is all-matching and original except for the bolt, and is NOT import marked.  The Short Magazine Lee Enfield (SMLE) was the main battle rifle of the British Military in World War 1, and continued to serve in a large capacity thru World War 2 and beyond.  It is considered one of the best bolt-action military rifles ever made by many experts today, and original examples in all variations are sought-after by collectors and shooters alike .  This particular example was made by the Birmingham Small Arms Company in Birmingham, England, and is a No.1 Mk.III* model.  It is chambered in the standard British Military cartridge of the time, .303 British.  As mentioned before, this rifle appears to be all-original and matching except for the bolt, which is the proper bolt but not numbered to this rifle.  The original blue finish on the guns shows some wear and age, but has a very attractive "combat-used" look to it.  The bore in this SMLE is excellent, much better than most of the WW1 SMLE's we encounter.  The bore is bright and clean with nice strong rifling throughout.  This SMLE should shoot just as well today as it did in 1916.  The original factory stock set is complete and in good shape overall.  There are dings, dents, and scratches in the wood as you would expect to see on a combat rifle that is more than 100 years old, but no major damage or loose parts.  The right side of the buttstock assembly has a blank brass I.D. disc affixed to the right side, and all of the stock hardware is intact and tight to the wood.  The only real crack we can find on any of the parts is at the rear of the buttstock on the right side, and it does not go thru to the left side of the stock and is contained by the buttplate which wraps over the top of the butt.  This could be left as-is and should be fine, or the new owner could remove the buttplate and fix it with glue if he or she so chooses.  All of the controls on this SMLE are in perfect working order, and the bolt works smoothly and precisely in the action and turns into battery perfectly.  As mentioned before, this B.S.A. Co. No.1 Mk.III* comes with an original 1907 Pattern bayonet without a scabbard and an original British Military canvas sling.  If you have been looking for a nice original WW1 example of this famous British Military rifle for your collection, here is your chance to get a really nice non-import example that could be enjoyed at both the shooting range and on display.
