It was produced most likely in 1865 given the low serial number. The model was produced to fill a perceived need for a pistol smaller than the popular No. 2 Old Army 6-shot tip-up revolver but more powerful than the original No. 1 seven shot in 22 rimfire. Since its size fell between the No. 1 and No. 2, Smith & Wesson chose to give the new model the rather novel designation of No. 1-1/2. It is a 5-shot design. These pistols were quite popular back in the mid-late 19th century as back-up or concealed-carry revolvers. Amazingly, the bore is in extremely good condition. This is very surprising considering how corrosive black powder is and how many gun owners back than simply did not care to clean their firearms on a regular basis. Clearly, the original and succeeding owners took keeping the barrel clean very seriously. The No. 1-1/2 was probably re-blued at some point. One reason to suspect this is the finish on the ejector rod under the barrel. This part was normally color case-hardened rather than blued. In addition, the cylinder has changed to a patina while the rest of the revolver is blued. Mechanically, the revolver functions as it should. The markings on the barrel are still clear and visible. The front sight has had the back end cut down in a curve for better sighting in certain sunlight conditions. This was to prevent sunlight from refracting off the back of the sight, preventing the shooter from sighting the pistol on the target. This revolver would make a nice addition to any S&W collection.
