#18397, Johann Jakob Reeb, Bonn, Germany: A Pre-War 7 x 57R Over & Under Double Rifle Made in 1940 with a Best 300 Series Action that has double underlugs with double bite plus double bite top lock in the Kersten style, 24 1/2" extractor Krupp steel barrels, Full length solid rib with 1 standing & 1 folding rear sights, Original factory claw bases, Well done replacement rings with a neat Leupold 2 1/4 power scope that is serial #1597 with steel cover caps that are stamped "Leupold & Stevens Instruments, Portland, Oregon", It has a Dural frame with steel striker bushings; The crossbolt, top lever and trigger plate is steel, Nitro Proofed with a 9 gram bullet (140 grain bullet) in March of 1940, Bolstered frame, Scalloped action back, Double triggers with the front a set trigger, Cocking indicators, Pistol grip stock at 14 1/8" lop over a horn buttplate, Steel trigger guard, Sling eyes, European style shadowline cheekpiece, 6 lbs. 12 oz. as a neat open sight rifle and 7 lbs. 5 oz. with the small Leupold scope, Borderline engraving only, The original barrel blue at 95%, The original finish on the Dural frame at 75% with a very nice patina, The wood finish is original at 92% with very light hunting & handling marks, The original checkering is sharp & crisp and remains at 98%, The bores are excellent plus and they look like they did in March of 1940. This is a doggone solid, tight, clean and well-made classic 1940 German double rifle.

J.J. Reeb Company in Bonn, Germany (1843-1924) worked for Ewald Becher in 1867 and took over the business in 1870. In 1877 he added another workshop and turned over the business in 1809 to his sons Philip and Hans. Hans Reeb became a master gunmaker in 1911. All the Reebs, besides being master gunsmiths had shops besides thriving retail businesses that catered to the wealthy in the nobility and aristocracy. They were listed as suppliers to the courts of “Prinz Leopold of Prussia – Kronprinz of the German Reich of Prussia – Prinz Chlodwig of Hessen – Herzog Carl Eduard”.
