French Antique “MANSTOPPER” Flintlock .50 Pistol
Late-18th Century European Defensive Weapon
Here we present an antique French Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 18th Century in France. This large bore flintlock pistol was used primarily as a self-defense weapon, as a “manstopper”. Their effective range was short, and they were frequently used as an adjunct to a sword. Pistols in this era were usually smoothbore, although some rifled pistols were produced. They came in a variety of sizes with the smallest being less than 6 inches and the largest ranging to over 20 inches. The smallest would fit into a typical pocket or a hand warming muff and could easily be carried by women.
The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are semi-bright. The markings are clear. The stock is smooth and in good condition with a small repair just forward of the lock. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is functional.
