.50-70 GOVT Made Famous During the Indian Wars!
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1866 Allin Trapdoor Rifle, the rifle being manufactured circa 1866 and then converted for use with the metallic .50-70 Govt cartridge shortly after that. After the American Civil War, the United States military was slow to adopt new technological advances in firearms and opted to retrofit their enormous surplus inventory of Model 1861 type muskets to fire cartridges. Many different types of conversions were conceived and implemented. This one is named for its inventor, Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer for Springfield Armory.
These conversions were the main infantry weapon of the West and played a large role in the Indian Wars of the late 19th century. 25,000 Model 1863s received the Allin Conversion, enabling them to be loaded via the breach through a “trapdoor” mechanism.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a gray patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with visible inspector cartouches. The bore is clean with strong rifling. The action is excellent.
