Description:

BUCK GARRETT’S Frank Wesson 2 TRIGGER Rifle Antique

Famous Texas Gunfighter & Oklahoma Lawman!

Here we present an antique Frank Wesson Second Type Two-Trigger Rifle in .22 Rimfire, made circa 1863-75 in Worcester, Massachusetts. This rifle is documented as having come out of Buck Garrett’s collection. Buck Garrett is rumored to have been related to Pat Garrett, the killer of Billy the Kid after the Lincoln County Range War, though this note asserts that they were first cousins. Regardless of relation, Buck Garrett was a notable gunfighter as well, and participated in the Johnson County Range War in Wyoming on the side of the Wyoming Stock Grower’s Association as one of Major Frank Wolcott’s so-called “Regulators”. This range war was like many others in that, ironically, outlaws and lawmen fought side by side, illustrating the blurred lines of “good” men and “bad”.

Buck, by the accounts available, was one of the good ones. After the Johnson Country War in 1892, Buck became a US Deputy Marshal and settled in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is said to have run down Bill Dalton in 1894. He was Chief of Police of Ardmore from 1905 to 1910, then Carter County Sheriff until 1922, until his opposition to the local Ku Klux Klan cost him his job. As Sheriff, he was known to only rarely wear a gun and is rumored to have occasionally hired attorneys for the people he arrested.

Included is a handwritten note from 1987 states that the original owner was Buck Garrett and the chain of ownership afterwards. It reads, “2-10-87/this Frank Wesson 22 rifle belonged to Buck Garrett whom was 1’st Cousin of Pat Garrett. Pat was the person whom killed Billy the Kid. I bought this gun in Las Vegas Nev. From Bill Watson. Bill Watson and Ron Donahue also of Las Vegas bough the Buck Garrett collection in Nov of 1986 from Buch Garrett’s daughter-in-law, who is 84-years old still living in Las Vegas/there was some very good engraved Colt Single actions and some valuable law badges/John Loomer/Fergus Falls, Minn 2-10-87”.

The overall condition is good. The blue finish has turned with age. The markings are clear. The stock shows much use and remains smooth and solid. The bore is in good shape, clean with good rifling. The action is strong. Here is a neat opportunity to own a famous Western lawman’s rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
