Description:

SCARCE Antique SPRINGFIELD-BURNSIDE-SPENCER Rifle

NEAT Western Frontier Cavalry & Infantry Weapon!

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Burnside Rifle Co. Infantry Rifle Conversion of a Contract Model 1865 Spencer Repeating Carbine, made circa 1865 by contract by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island and converted circa 1871 at the Springfield Armory. Only about 1,100 were given this conversion from carbines to full length rifle. Curiously, though now a full-length rifle, the arsenal kept the saddle ring for cavalry use! The Spencer was one of the most successful carbines that was desirable on Civil War battlefields and beyond due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and the robust action meant that this gun could handle the field and keep functioning reliably. The U.S. Ultimately adopted the more powerful but single-shot Trapdoor rifles and carbines, but to many this was the more desirable and better weapon! This would have seen action against the many Native American tribes that were fighting back against American encroachment and violated treaties.

The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860/MANUF’D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO.” and “Model 1865”. There is a faint inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts show some original finish and are largely gray with an aged patina. The markings are clear. The numbers match. The stock is in great shape. The bore is clean with good rifling. The action is excellent. The Spencer was one of the best weapons of the mid-19th Century in the U.S. arsenal. Here is your chance to own one of the few Springfield-Burnside-Spencer Rifles ever made!
