Description:

SCARCE Antique CADET SPRINGFIELD 1873 TRAPDOOR

FINE Condition .45-70 GOVT 2-Band Rifle!

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Cadet Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, made by the Springfield Armory. Manufactured between 1873 and 1877 during the height of the Indian War and the Custer massacre, this is a cadet rifle version of the U.S. Springfield Model 1873. Only 3,000 cadet variants were produced while over 50,000 of the regular infantry rifles were made. These slightly smaller cadet rifles would have been used by cadets at West Point, for drilling and marksmanship, in preparation of careers as Army officers. Those who would have drilled with these would have gone on to participate in such conflicts as the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, and World War I.

This Trapdoor Rifle is equipped with a blade front sight/bayonet lug and tangent rear sight graduated to 1,100 yards with the base graduated 1-4 on the right side. The left rear of the barrel has the "V/P/eagle head/P" proofs. The high arch breechblock is marked "MODEL/1873/eagle head/cross arrows/US". The lock plate has the eagle/shield motif and "U.S./SPRINGFIELD/1873" in front of the hammer. The left stock an "ESA" cartouche on the left side ahead of the wrist. True to the cadet variant of the Model 1873, this one has a two-click tumbler and a shorter 29-1/2 inch barrel secured by 2 barrel bands.

The overall condition is fine. 90% of the blue finish remains. Case colors are visible and silvering. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in fantastic shape. The bore is fine, bright with sharp rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fine example of a scarce Trapdoor Rifle that West Point cadets would have trained with!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 29-1/2 inches.
