Description:
Sold Pending Funds - A beautiful 1962 first year HI-STANDARD Supermatic Trophy Model 103 “Spacegun” in the rarest tapered barrel length of 10” with a muzzle brake and SANDERSON TARGET STOCKS.   It is in the original factory High Gloss polish of the Trophy Line as opposed to the lesser polished Citation.  As such, it has the gold trigger, gold safety button and gold inlaid lettering.  For the 103 Series pistols, the Trophy was the highest grade target pistol destined to become one of the most important pistols in the Hi-Standard line. The rakish lines of the 103 Series guns along with some of the very unusual barrel profiles were unconventional in their day and remain so today.  This pistol is particularly interesting because it comes with the very scarce 10-inch "Space Gun" tapered barrel. This unusual, odd-looking barrel features a tapered round/thin profile with a large diameter muzzle atop which sat the front sight. This fat muzzle section acted as a vibration damper and also had slots which served as anchor points for a detachable muzzle brake. The length of the barrel was also grooved for the attachment of barrel weights, both of which are included. The rear sight was mounted on the rear of the barrel, above the chamber.  Pistols shipped with the standard shorter barrels had the rear sight mounted in a dovetail on the slide.  Since this pistol has no slide dovetail it is safe to assume it shipped with the long space gun barrel.  The frame and slide have matching serial numbers.  The excellent original factory finish has evidence of careful usage and collector type markings associated with a well-cared for 57-year old firearm, but no rust or pitting.   The mechanics appear to be in perfect working order and the bore is mirror bright with sharp rifling. It comes with one factory 10-shot magazine. According to the serial number, this pistol was produced in 1962. Please view the photos here for the purpose of evaluating the condition for yourself.  This item qualifies as a C&R.

Versions of this pistol could be used in ISU rapid-fire Olympic courses of fire (.22 Short caliber), as well as standard bullseye shooting. U.S. shooters won Olympic Rapid Fire gold medals in 1952 and 1960 using High Standard pistols, the only gold medals ever won in this event with an American made pistol. The Supermatic features various barrel lengths with integrally machined muzzle brake, removable barrel weight options, finely adjustable rear sight and a two-stage trigger that breaks like the proverbial glass rod at 2.5 pounds with zero over-travel due to an integral screw stop system.
