Description: DESCRIPTION: Remington 1858 New Model Army, originally 44 percussion, converted to 44 Centerfire and would use 44 Long Colt or 44 Remington ammo, standard 8" octagon barrel with cone front sight and sighting notch milled into the top of the frame, 6-shot cylinder, walnut 2-piece grips, brass trigger guard, single action, most likely converted by the Whitneyville Armory in the late 1800. Serial # on underside of barrel is 23368 and serial # on frame under left grip is 21904, common with the conversions that they don't match. The conversion number "19" matches on the underside of the barrel, front of the cylinder, under the trigger guard, on the frame under the right grip, and on the inside of the right grip wood. Cylinder is marked "PAT. APP'D FOR", a telltale sign of an armory conversion, also indicated by the half-moon conversion right that dovetails into the frame and is locked in by a small screw. "I.F." and "R" appear on the frame when the trigger guard is removed. CONDITION: Overall a gun metal gray with no original finish remaining. Metal surfaces have tiny pinprick pitting and scattered oxidation but no major or deep pitting. Original walnut grips show light wear, no splits or cracks, never sanded or refinished. Cylinder has very light wobble and locks up tightly; hammer spring is strong. Bore is very good with sharp rifling and is fairly bright, only scattered light black powder fouling that may clean out. Front barrel lug to lock lever is made of copper and the lever is tight with only slight side-to-side play. Rates NRA Antique Good. TERMS: No international sales.
