Description:

Scarce U.S. NAVY Antique JENKS-AMES Breech CARBINE

Made 3 Years Prior to the Mexican-American War!

Here we present an antique U.S. Navy Jenks-Ames Breech Loading Carbine, made circa 1843 by N.P. Ames in Springfield, Massachusetts. Only 4,250 were made. The primary users were the U.S. Navy, Bureau of Ordnance and Hydrography, and even the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, though the latter are extremely rare. Some were even given to companies D and E of the 1st Regiment of Dragoons for testing. These were used during the Mexican-American War and were still in use during the American Civil War.

What made the Jenks design unique was its convenient breech-loading capability. Pinch the ears of the rear sight and lift up to expose an oval aperture for loading a paper cartridge. This version has the Maynard tape priming system which made the carbine even more advanced, though the paper priming system was not as reliable as desired.

This specimen was produced by E. Remington & Son after acquiring a contract for 1000 pieces from the original producer, the Ames Mfg. Co. The lock reads “Remington’s/Herkimer/NY”. The breech cover is marked “W.Jenks/USN/JCB/P/1843”. The initials “JCB” are for inspector Joseph C. Bragg.

The overall condition is very good or better. Some visible case colors remain on the “mule ear” hammer. The barrel is bright. Markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape, smooth and solid with legible cartouches. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 24-1/4 inches in length.

Caliber: .54 percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
