Bertuzzi 20 Ga. Stocked and finished by Steven Dodd Hughes
This gun was presented in the prestigious museum exhibition Three Centuries of Tradition: The Renaissance of Fine Sporting Arms in America at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the Houston Museum of Fine Art 2003-04. A finely crafted gun ready for upland bird hunting or clay target shooting.
A 20 Ga. barreled action made by Bertuzzi in Italy was purchased from noted M-21 dealer Don Criswell in 1995. Much metalwork was performed on the action and barrels including filing a raised edge on the trigger guard, chiseling a raised bead around the fences, filing a cove molding above the action bar and completely refining and detailing all of the metalwork.
The barrels had the forcing cones lengthened, the chokes open to Right: .003” Skeet and Left: .019” Imp/Mod. The bores were then finished honed.
The stock dimensions are very shootable with a longish LOP and favorable comb dimensions and normal cast-off. The stock could be shortened and still have good dimensions. The mechanical single trigger is of reliable design and the chokes well suited to flushing birds.
The sidelocks are H& H type with V springs, interceptor sears, seven pins and pieced bridles. The tumblers are gold lined as cocking indicators and the bridle screws nitre blued. The top lever and safety button are hand checkered and SAFE is gold inlaid in the top tang.
All of the metalwork was hand polished to 600 action in preparation for finishing. It was sent to master engraver Michael Dubber for Rose and Scroll engraving in the English style. Dubber designed and cut a unique negative space design with small English style scrolls and bouquets of roses on the fences and center of the lock plates. Artful rosette were engraved on the hinge pins and screwheads of the lock screw, top lever, tang and trigger guard. The lockplates and barrel breeches sport ball and bar borders. The remainder of the metal, top tang, trigger guard, forend escutcheon and to lever appropriate coverage of small scroll engraving.
No detail was spared in the high quality gunmaking process. The project began with Bertuzzi “Best” metalwork made in the 1980s when Filli. Bertuzzi were considered one of the premiere Italian gun companies. All subsequent work by Steven Dodd Hughes, Michael Dubber and Turnbull Restoration serve to heighten the quality and beauty of this fully custom double gun. Hughes Completed the project in 1999 and it has not been fired since.
