NEW YORK Combination RIFLE-SHOTGUN by HOWLAND

RUFUS HOWLAND Circa 1850 in Binghamton NEW YORK!

Here we present an antique Percussion Rifle & Shotgun Over/Under Combination Gun by Rufus Howland, made circa 1850 in Binghamton, New York. This is a distinct design that New York gun makers seemed to favor during this period marked by westward expansion, hunting, trapping, and frontier living. This rifle over a smoothbore would have given the user two shots instead of one in a day when most people had to make one count. This would have come in handy when hunting various types of game as well as defending oneself against dangerous game or two-legged predators. The smooth bore would have offered versatility in that either shot, a single ball or conical, or a combination of “buck ‘n’ ball” could be used depending on the circumstances.

Rufus Howland was active in his trade from about 1840-1870, spending the years of the American Civil War making long range sharpshooter rifles with telescopic sights for the government.

This gun features a double set trigger. The front trigger fires both barrels. The rear trigger “sets” the front trigger for a very light and crisp break. The set trigger was designed to work only for the rifled bore. The front sight is a blade, with a low profile open rear sight mounted on the barrel, and a tang-mounted peep sight that folds conveniently away when not in use. The barrel is marked “R.F. HOWLAND” and there is a small patchbox set into the right side of the stock. This is a very nice set up.

The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces bear the original brown finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great shape, smooth and solid. The bores are in great shape, the rifled bore having sharp rifling and the smooth bore being uniformly smooth and dusty. The action is excellent. This is a very well-made gun that would have been a quintessential part of someone’s kit on the frontier.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.
