Description:
Serial #15078, .455/.476, 6" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has a small amount of freckling within the grooves at the breech. This is a truly handsome revolver that has retained 90-95% of the original bright, lustrous blue finish with scattered minor handling marks and silvered fading along the cylinder, raised edges, and projections. Some mild flaking is also present along the underside of the barrel, which has “R.H. MILNE-REDHEAD" engraved in crisp Roman capitals. The topstrap is marked “'WG' ARMY MODEL" on the left side, the “Winged Bullet" W&S trademark on the left side of the frame, and a Wilkinson Sword Co. retailer marking along the top of the barrel rib. The hammer and trigger have some traces of mild freckling on the bright metal, while the thumb lever has about 95-97% of the original blue remaining. The checkered walnut grips are numbered to the gun on the interior, and are in very good shape with some scattered bruises, mild flattening of the points, and Wilkinson number on the butt: “W275". The lock-up is still solid and tight, and the action functions flawlessly. A small folio of biographical research that includes a copy of the Wilkinson purchase ledger entry for the revolver, as well as a small display plaque, are also included. Richard Henry Milne-Redhead, CMG was the son of Richard Milne-Redhead, Esq., FLS, FRGS and Maria Harrop Milne-Redhead, born on August 16, 1862. Milne-Redhead was educated at Eton (1877-1880), and soon after accepted a commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 5th Royal Lancashire Militia. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion (Militia) East Lancashire Regiment (as the 5th was redesignated following the Cardwell Reforms) the following year. He was promoted to Captain (and Instructor of Musketry) in 1884, Major in 1892, and Lt. Colonel in 1900. The regiment embarked for service in the Boer War in February of 1900, arriving in Capetown the following month. He commanded the battalion during its first posting at De Aar in the Cape Colony, before returning briefly to England upon their transfer to Norvalspont, North Cape Colony, which bordered the Orange Free State. Upon his return to Africa in August, 1900, Milne-Redhead resumed command of the battalion. They were subsequently ordered to garrison the banks of the Vet River, Orange River Colony, and he was made Commandant at Brandfort. Here the battalion set up a series of fortified posts between Brandfort and Allemans Station in anticipation of Boer incursions, and, from June of 1901 on, occupied a series of blockhouses situated between Smaldeol and Riet Spruit, where they engaged and repelled many attempts by Boer Commandos to cross the perimeter. He relinquished command and returned to England in August of 1901. In recognition of his service, Milne-Redhead was made a Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, and was also mentioned in Lord Robert’s despatch of April 2, 1901, for “having rendered special and meritorious service" (London Gazette, September 10, 1901). He was granted the honorary rank of Colonel upon his retirement in October of 1901, and took an interest in Scouting and local affairs until his death in January of 1944. This is a splendid WG, in excellent overall condition, that was carried by a respected Boer War officer, and would make a stellar addition to any collection. FFL or C&R
