Description:

1880s Antique WEBLEY #5 ARMY EXPRESS .450 Revolver

Large Bore British Military & Police Revolver

Here we present an antique Webley #5 Army Express Revolver, made circa 1885 in London, England by Webley & Scott. Webley produced their first pistol is 1853 and introduced their first double action in 1867. They are best known for supplying the British Army’s pistols during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. The No. 5 is one of the later pistols produced by Webley before they altered their nomenclature from ‘numbers’ to ‘marks’ when the Webley MK I was adopted by the British Army in 1887. The No. 5 is often referred to as the Webley new Model or the New Army Express or the No. 5 Army Express.

These would have been at soldiers’ and officers’ sides all over the world during the later-19th and early-20th Centuries in places like Asia, Australia, Africa, Canada, and the British Isles. This period was characterized by the Boer Wars in Africa, unrest in Asia to include the Boxer Rebellion, and growing nationalist movements in India and Ireland.

This Webley revolver shares much in common with the American Colt Single Action Army Revolver. It is a large, military revolver in .450 caliber with a loading gate and ejector rod. Its double action sets it apart, resembling the Colt Model 1878. This one is marked “WEBLEY’S No. 5/.450” on the right side of the frame and features the “W&S” flying bullet logo on the left. The underside of the barrel bears an acceptance mark. The top left of the ribbed octagonal barrel and the cylinder chambers bear Birmingham proof marks. The top of the frame is marked “V & R. BLAKEMORE/LONDON”, a family of gunmakers and arms dealers found at 8 Lime St. E.C. at the time of this revolver’s sale.

The overall condition is near fine. 10% of the original finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The checkered hardwood grips are in good shape. The bore is fine, clear and shiny with strong rifling. The action is excellent. This is a fantastic and rare example of a British Army revolver from the final decades of the 19th Century!
