Description:
This is a very clean and attractive left-handed Remington Woodsmaster Model 742 BDL Deluxe rifle chambered in .308 Winchester.  The Woodsmaster 742 BDL Deluxe was manufactured between 1966 and 1980 in .30-06 or .308 caliber and featured a gloss blue factory finish, a stepped receiver, a right-handed gas-operated semi-automatic action, a detachable 4-shot box magazine, and a Monte Carlo-style Walnut stock set with a black pistol grip cap, a black plastic Remington-branded buttplate, basket-weave checkering, and a right or left-handed cheekpiece.  This particular example was made in 1977 and is in excellent condition overall, showing only some minor safe dings and storage marks.  The original hangtag is still attached to the triggerguard.  It is obvious that despite having optics and sling swivels mounted on it that this rifle has spent the vast majority of it's life in storage.  The blue finish does not show any of the typical finish wear you would see on a rifle that was carried afield or to the range frequently.  What deductions we can find are more than likely caused by a crowded safe, like the top of the front sight blade being broken off but no damage to the sight ramp, muzzle, or barrel in that area (close-up picture provided).  The bore is pristine in this Remington, still showing like-new sharp lands and grooves in the rifling and no wear or imperfections.  The original stock set is also in great shape, free from any cracks, chips. repairs, or major dings.  Only under close inspection can you find some handling/storage marks in the wood.  The scope on this rifle is a vintage Telstar 4 power model made in Japan in excellent condition.  It has surprisingly clear and bright optics and all of the adjustments are functional.  It is a neat scope in that the sight picture is a "wideview" oval type, and the reticle is a verticle pointed post with a fine crosshair.  As mentioned earlier, the scope mounts are period see-thru models that allow the use of the factory iron sights on the rifle.  We do not know if the scope was ever zero'ed to the rifle.  All of the controls on this rifle are in perfect working order, and the action is smooth and precise when worked by hand.  The bolt slams home and locks into battery with authority, and the trigger breaks nicely with a light pull.  We have no doubt that this Remington Woodsmaster will shoot just as accurately and reliably today as the day it left the factory 42 years ago, and the .308 Winchester chambering is perfect for hunting big game or a day at the range.  If you are looking for a classy and attractive left-handed self-loading rifle for your collection you would be hard-pressed to find a better one than this vintage Remington.
