Description:
This certainly one of the nicest Japanese WW2 Type 14 Nambu pistol rigs we have ever had.  Purchased directly from the veteran's son that captured it on Iwo Jima, this gun has never been on the collector's market before now and is exactly how it was captured from the Japanese solider.  This Nambu comes complete with 2 original magazines (1 matches the gun, 1 is one digit off), the original holster and shoulder straps with the original Japanese Military ID tag in the lid denoting the serial number and Japanese soldier it was issued to, the original cleaning rod, and TWO sets of capture papers he was issued at different times for the same gun.  The only alteration that has been done to this rig is the American Marine that captured it, Corporal R.C. Wood,  wrote his name in pencil on the ID tag in the lid of the holster.  The gun itself is in excellent 100% original condition.  The Nagoya factory blue finish rates 97 to 98%, with just a few spots of very minor wear/thinning.  The bore in this Type 14 is superb, mirror-bright and with sharp rifling and no visible imperfections.  The original grips on this Nambu are in excellent condition, perfectly fit to the gun, and both sides are numbered to the pistol.  We have taken this Nambu down and all of the numbered parts are original and matching.  All of the controls on this pistol are in perfect working order, and we have no doubt that it would function and fire just as well today as the day it left the Nagoya factory in Japan 76 years ago.  This Type 14 comes with two magazines, one that is numbered to the gun "639", and one that is numbered "669".  It is our opinion that this was likely a factory error as they were hand stamped at various angles and depths and the "6" looks very close to a 3, an easy mistake to be missed by the factory inspector.  While the pistol is an exceptional example by itself, what really makes this an amazing rig is the holster and capture papers.  This original holster is in amazing condition, and it is VERY rare to find one with the original Japanese Military issue tag still in it, much less still with the original matching gun.  There is a close-up picture provided of this tag, and as mentioned previously you can see the Marine's name written on it to the left of the serial number.  It would be very interesting to have the Japanese writing translated on this tag to get the Japanese soldiers name that carried it.  The leather in this original holster has been well-cared for and is still flexible and soft.  All of the original stitching is fully intact, and all of the hardware is in excellent condition, including the leather-covered springs on the lid closure tab.  Another interesting feature of this particular holster is that the shoulder strap has been fastened with a leather lace in a way to make a loop on the rear portion of the strap by the Japanese soldier that had it.  There is a close-up picture provided of this modification.  Our best guess is that this loop was to allow attachment of a pistol lanyard or another piece of gear of some type.  While there is no extra firing pin in the holster provision for it, the original cleaning rod is still in place in the loops provided for it inside the holster.  The capture papers that come with this rig are the originals and not copies.  As you can see from the pictures, the first set of papers were issued on Nov. 23rd, 1945 within the 5th Tank Battalion by the U.S.M.C. Company Commander "C. S. Sands" to U.S.M.C. Corporal R.C. Wood for "One (1) Pistol Jap w/ Helmet & Bayonet". It also specifies Cpl. Wood's serial number 525103.  The second set of paperwork was issued April 2nd, 1946 from within the "Second Tank Battalion, Second Marine Division, Fleet Marine Force, In The Field".  It states: "This is to certify that the bearer Cpl. Ralph C. Wood is authorized to have in his possession one (1) Sword Jap and one (1) Pistol Jap which are authorized Japanese was trophies, issued to him as such by BmQM.".  It is signed by the Lt. Col. USMC, Commanding, 2nd Tank Bn. "J_ Williams Jr.". We can't quite make out the second initial in his name but I'm sure it could be found by researching the commanding officers of the 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Tank Battalion.  The Marine that captured this rig got the first set of paperwork from the company commander under which he fought at Iwo Jima with the 5th Marines / 5th Tank Battalion, then apparently needed another set from the commander of the 2nd Marines /2nd Tank Battalion while on occupation duty in Japan.  This Type 14 Nambu rig would be a centerpiece-type addition to ANY military/WW2 weapons collection.  It would be next to impossible to upgrade from this one in any category!!!
