....Superb carbine, coming from my private collection; the best example I had seen in 15 years of collecting!
In 1935, Mauser OBERNDORF was contracted by the government of Chile to build 10,000 new carbines. The guns were specially made and provided to the Carabineros de Chile, a military styled investigative POLICE force under the Ministry of the Interior. The Carabineros covered much of the rugged and remote countryside by horseback, and the side mounted sling was handy. The crossed rifle logo of the police force is nicely stamped on the receiver ring, with the slogan "ORDEN Y PATRIA", which translates to honor and homeland. Chile’s MODELO 1935 in 7x57mm rifle is unique. It is actually labeled as a carbine while having the 21.50-inch barrel of the short rifle. It is based on the Mauser Model 1898 action, but this time Chile returned to Germany for manufacture at Mauser-Werke in Oberndorf and carries the MAUSER BANNER LOGO on the rear of the receiver as used during the 1930’s. The stock has pistol grip and sling swivels on the stock’s left side. Chilean Model 1935 rifles. Out of the 10,000 made, a very small number of these rifles were imported to the US meanwhile, a good quantity still remains in Chile to use for parades and training purposes.
Condition: Overall in Excellent condition, very clean gun with NO visible pitting. Well defined, deep markings, inspection marks and cartouches. ALL ORIGINAL, ALL CORRECT MILITARY CONFIGURATION, ALL MATCHING NUMBERS (receiver, barrel, all parts of the bolt, magazine floor plate, trigger, trigger guard, barrel bands, cleaning rod, buttstock, and handguard).
Original bluing very nice bright deep, clean on the receiver and on the bridge; although there is edge wear and thinning on the exposed forward portion of the barrel, floor plate, trigger guard and bands exhibiting some smooth grayish even pleasing patina, there is a couple of tiny freckles under the handguard on the barrel not exposed. Bright Bent bolt as manufactured. This rifle seems to have been carry much more than it has been shot; the bolt face is clean with NO ring around firing pin hole. Action is crisp; bore is smooth with good rifling; lands are brighter than the grooves. Buttplate has aging spots and scratches as well as the magazine floor plate. The original German walnut stock with beautifuly curly grain has a nicely marked cartouche (because of the nature of the grain the cartouche is faint) and inspection marks; showing the usual dents, scuffs (from carrying on a cavalry saddle), scratches, bruises, nicks, handling marks (also commonly found firing pin dents from officers servicing the carbine on the filed). Stock has NO CRACKS, NO REPAIRS, NO GAUGES, NO CHIPS. Is appears to have a tiny discreet import mark on the side of the barrel. The sling swivels are in good condition, the rear has a few small dents not affecting the functionality. Includes the original leather sling in good supple condition with some expected wear and minor creases; stitching is good. Crisp markings; "crowned B" (Beschuss-fired), " crowned G" (geschoss-projectile), "crowned N" (nitrocellulose) and the "crowned U" (untersuchung-examination). CCh Carabineros Chile.
This is an outstanding specimen of a very scarce CARBINE-SHORT rifle (21.5" which it makes it very desirable for its maneuverability) . ONLY 10,000 made (very few made it to the US). 1935 BANNER MAUSER rifle for the CHILEAN POLICE OBERNDORF German made with the ORDEN Y PATRIA cross rifle on the receiver ring in ALL MATCHING; ALL ORIGINAL COMPLETE (with cleaning rod and sling) MILITARY CONFIGURATION very hard to upgrade that would make a fine addition to you collection.
