Description:
The Czech vz.24 Pistole was the standard sidearm of the Czech Army starting in 1926 and remained in service until the German occupation of WW2, at which point the German Army continued production for their use.  The vz.24 got it's start in 1923 when the Czech Armament Commission requested that CZ (Ceska Zbrojovka) redesign and manufacture the vz.22 to make it more reliable, which was previosuly manufactured at BRNO (Czechoslovak Zbrojovka).  Despite the price per pistol being significantly higher than what BRNO charged per pistol, the Armament Commission struck a deal with CZ to build 20,000 of these pistols in December of 1923.  Constant problems, delays, and changes to the design required by the commission delayed the pistol from finally being accepted until August of 1925 when the model officially became the vz.24 and went into full production.  While there were many other orders placed later on, the first order of 20,000 pistols was completed in June of 1926.  This example is one of these first production run pistols, serial number 4442 manufactured in 1925 and accepted into Czech Military use in 1926.  It is an all-original pistol with unit markings complete with an original Czech Military holster.  Both the slide and frame are stamped with the CZ proof and "25" for the 1925 manufacture date, and the Czech military "Lion 26" is stamped into the right side of the frame for the 1926 military acceptance date.  The unit markings stamped on the front gripstrap are "110 D I085" which translates to 110th Artillery, weapon number i085 according to R.J. Berger's book Know Your Czechoslovakian Pistols.  This pistol has had a very interesting life, first serving with the Czech 110th Artillery from 1926 until the German invasion, at which point it was captured by a German soldier or that Czech soldier went in German military service.  The pistol remained in Axis hands until it was captured by U.S. soldier in France or Germany after D-Day and brought home or shipped here to the States.  It has certainly witnessed a great deal of World War 2 combat/history.  As you can see in the pictures, the vast majority of the original finish is still intact, but shows some wear and tear that you would expect from a combat-used pistol that is over 90 years old.  The majority of the finish wear is on the widest part of the slide on either side where it made contact with the holster.  The finish on the top of the slide, either side of the frame, and the front grip strap is in much better shape.  The bore in this vz.24 is excellent.  It still shows strong rifling and is bright and clean with no visible pitting or erosion.  The hammer and trigger which were originally strawed from the factory show some of the yellow finish remaining, mostly in protected areas.  The original wrap-around smooth Walnut grips are in superb condition overall.  They are free from cracks and chipping which is commonly seen on this model, and they are free from any repairs.  The Walnut is still nice and smooth with only some minor handling marks.  The factory original 8-round magazine is in good shape overall, and appears to be fully functional.  All of the controls work 100% as they were designed to on this vz.24, and the slide works smoothly when worked by hand.  As mentioned previously, this pistol comes with the original Czech leather holster in good condition.  The leather is stil soft and pliable, and all of the stitching appears to be original and fully intact.  It appears to have originally been brown when new, but at some point was dyed black, potentially when carried by a German soldier.  The back of the holster shows evidence of having shoulder straps sewn-on at one point, which have been removed.  The inside of the top flap shows a partial maker's mark stamp to the left of the closure strap, and below that also has some initials/letters scratched into it by one of the soldiers who owned it.  The extra magazine/cleaning kit pouch on the front of the holster is empty.  This is really one heck of a nice honest CZ vz.24 rig.  We don't often encounter these vz.24s in any condition, and the extensive military history of this rig really makes it a very interesting and worthwhile piece to add to your collection.
