Description:
RARE AND HISTORICAL KRAG “VARIANT 1895” CARBINE, #28XXX, ONLY  THREE  AND FOUR NUMBERS AWAY FROM TWO DOCUMENTED TEDDY ROOSEVELT ROUGH RIDER KRAG CARBINES!  The “1895 Variant” of the later Model 1896 carbine was the U.S. Government’s first smokeless powder cartridge carbine, chambered in .30-40 Krag caliber. This example is correctly stamped “1895” on the receiver side with no “Model” designation attached. It retains the correct “C” (for carbine) rear sight. Stock and handguard generally excellent with the stock cartouche visible but worn from sling ring usage. Mottled gray receiver with good blue on the ejector, tight action, exc. bore. Barrel blue is very aged and mixing with uncleaned brown. Correct sight protector barrel band. Sling ring and bar intact. Still has the three piece cleaning rod set in the butt! These rarely come up for sale and this one has a great serial number that is right in the middle of those issued to the Rough Riders.
