Description:
This is a U.S. Model 1863 Rifle aka "Zouave" Rifle.  Manufactured by Remington in 1863 the rifle was intended to replace the then obsolete U.S. Model 1855 Harper's Ferry Maynard tape primed rifle. 12,501 of these handsome brass mounted rifles were produced but their use remains a mystery.  Given the very fine condition many of these rifles are found in today it is unknown if any were actually issued or saw any field use during the Civil War. This example remains in very fine near mint unfired condition. The barrel retains 99 percent of its rich deep blue factory blued finish. There is absolutely no wear to the finish on the breech or bolster and the barrel markings are mint. The barrel has the three groove .58 caliber rifling which remains factory new, bright and shiney. The case hardened lock retains much of its original bright case hardened colors with perfect Remington's Ilion, N.Y. markings. Both lock and barrel have perfect 1863 date stampings. The fine brass mounts are a clean light aged yellow color showing sub-inspection letter stamps on each. The medium dark walnut colored stock retains all of its original factory oil finish with sharp edges and two perfect inspection cartouches on the left flat, it has only a few minor handling marks but no chips or cracks.. Original ramrod is finished bright, all screws are very fine and retain their original blued finish. The Zouave rifle is considered one of the best designed and highest quality arms produced during the Civil War and also one of the most attractive with its case hardened lock, blued barrel and brass mounts.
