New pictures at the end ( #14 and # 15).  Both are of the bore.  Probably as good as you will find for a gun of this era.  Bluing is about 100% for most of the gun.

I went out  and bought a good digital scale to weigh guns.  I wanted to make sure that I had a completely accurate weight for the gun.  According to the new scales, the gun weighs exactly 6 pounds, 10.1 oz.  This is a bit heavier than what is scratched on the gun (see photo).

For sale is a wonderful little Griftin & Howe Rifle, # 273, in the great 7x57 Mauser caliber.   The G&H Guns with the "Legend" numbered on the barrel are the most collectable and most valuable of Griffin & Howe's guns--simply because they had the most work put into them, and, obviously, took the most time to complete.

This rifle was probably completed in 1924.  It falls in the "Block" of serial numbers (# 251-300) that Griffin & Howe assigned to the 7 m/m cartridge from the years from June 1923 until the end of 1925.  The gun was converted from a Steyr Military rifle, which was originally probably produced shortly after 1909--it carries a low serial number.  The barrel length is 21."  The length of pull is 13 1/4".  This is the original armory stock with the gun.  Griffin & Howe took the armory stock, reshaped it, added the pistol grip cap (steel) and screw.  The screw is not lightly engraved, as are all of the screws holding the steel cap in place from about 1926 on.  The butt plate is original to the gun, a trap-door serrated plate, rather plain, but good-looking nonetheless.  In regards to the armory stock, you will note that a smaller piece of wood was added to the lower rear of the butt stock (when the military put the gun together).  There is a pronounced line there--you can see this plainly.  Because the gun itself is over 100 years old, the wood's contour there is not smooth, but a bit "abrupt."  However, it is original--and was restyled by G&H in same way that they utilized the Springfield Armory Stock in re-doing the 1922 Springfields.  Because of the originality, I would simply leave it as it is.

Because mounting a peep sight wasn't really an option, G&H mounted a very nice little island sight on the barrel.  I like this small sight, and it is stippled to cut down glare.  The original bolt handle was bent downward, and then checkered.  No pinstripe, but just checkered.

The legend markings are crisp and clear.  All original bluing on the gun.  I have seen later G&H Mannlicher guns, but never an earlier Steyr version.

6 lb. 5 oz. is lightly scratched in the stock (see picture).   Just behind the bolt, someone scratched this weight into the stock.  The action, like all Mannlicher Schoenauer's, is butter smooth when cycled.  Contact me if you have any questions.  I am going to add some additional pictures next week, which were in outside, and will show the gun in a better perspective.   I have just added a few more pictures which better show the stock and legend.  One of the unique things about the gun is the sight on the barrel--which I have mentioned.  Michael Petrov noted that G&H was very reluctant to put a sight on the barrel unless there was no other way to have a receiver sight on the gun.  This is one of those guns where they had to do exactly that.

Contact me with any questions.
