Description:
This is a very scarce Winchester Model 40, one of the first semi-auto shotgun designs by the Winchester firm.  Manufactured for only two years between 1940 and 1941, the Winchester Model 40 used a long recoil action and was offered in 12 gauge only with either a 28" or 30" inch barrel.  There were a total of approx. 12,000 of these shotgun made.  Proving to be of poor design, many of the Model 40's sold were recalled and destroyed, leaving very few examples floating around collections today.  This particular example is serial number 6580 and was likely made in the first part of 1941.  It is an all-original gun in very good condition overall.  The original factory blue finish shows some light wear in places and some high edge wear, but has a very pleasing and consistent look to it.  As you can see in the pictures, it still shows a lot of gloss in it, and has that unique blue tone that guns made by Winchester in the 1940's typically exhibit.  The bore in this Model 40 is superb, free from any pitting, dents, bulges, or imperfections, and appears mirror-bright.  The original smooth American Walnut stock set still looks beautiful, and is in very good condition overall.  The only deduction we can find on the stock set is what appears to be a small crack behind the rear of the triggerguard, however it does not carry thru to the top of the wrist nor will it open up when torqued.   It is more than likely superficial.  Outside of this imperfection the remainder of the stock set is free from any cracks, chips, repairs, or major wear/damage.  The original factory clear laquer finish on the stock set is fully intact and still clean and glossy, free from any chipping or spider cracking.  The original "Winchester Repeating Arms"-branded buttplate is still in place and in great shape, with a length of pull measuring 14.25" inches to the end of the buttplate.  All of the controls and mechanics of this Winchester are in perfect working order, and the bolt slams home with authority into battery.  We have no doubt that this Model 40 would function as well today as it did when it left the factory in 1941.  If you have been looking for one of these elusive Model 40's for your collection, here is your chance to get a beautiful all-original and lightly-used example.
