Description:
Up for sale is a Sharps New Model 1863 .50-70 Government Metallic Cartridge Conversion Carbine. 22” barrel, 3-groove, serial number C-1326 (or 101,326, since they used a “C” for 100,000) It is in original condition except the O ring on the sling ring bar is missing because it rattled when out game hunting (so I am told). Everything is in working order; no refinishing or restoration has been done – leaving that to you or the pros – other than some linseed oil rubbed into the walnut. This is guaranteed to be a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. There are a number of ways to determine this; the photos show most of the relevant stamps on the various metal parts.

Over 100,000 Sharps rifles were purchased by the federal government for use during the Civil War; afterwards, around 31,000 were converted to shoot metallic cartridges. Apparently they were sought after rifles. Similar weapons were used in the movies Quigley Down Under and True Grit.

The overall condition is pretty good; I am not a gun expert, hopefully the photos will speak for themselves. The walnut stock is dinged up a bit, and a former owner carved his initials, H.H., in the stock, but there are no cracks or repairs in the wood. Free shipping; Paypal only because it protects us both; I will cover the fee. Contact me for other payment options.
