45-90 WCF WINCHESTER 1885 High Wall Short Rifle
With R.T. FRAZIER Pueblo CO Original Scabbard!
Here we present an antique Winchester 1885 High Wall Rifle, chambered in 45-90, made in 1898 in Hartford, Connecticut. Ironically, this was Winchester’s first single shot rifle, the company having been founded on its winning lever action repeater design. John Moses Browning, the famed gun designer who forever changed the firearms landscape, began his career with this rifle in the 19th Century before dominating the world scene in the 20th Century.
This example is chambered in 45-90 W.C.F., a very desirable caliber, especially for large game. It was a rifle that someone customized to their own liking by cutting the barrel to 19-1/2 inches. This made for quite a handy yet powerful weapon. It also features a small leather “R.T. Frazier” scabbard that fits this shortened rifle to a tee. Robert Thompson Frazier was a famous saddle maker, who dealt in leather goods for most of his life, first apprenticing with Peter Becker in Leadville, Colorado, circa 1881. He then worked for and bought into the S.C. Gallup Saddlery Company in Pueblo, circa 1884, before starting his own company in 1898. Frazier was skilled with leather work, but was also a savvy businessman, buying into the mail order business model and selling all over the world. Robert lasted until 1931, leaving the business to his wife, Kitty, who operated the business until she passed in 1958.
The overall condition of this rig is very good. The barrel retains about 50% of its original blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is very good, with honest wear. The bore is rifled and clean. The action is strong. The scabbard also shows honest wear. The maker’s mark is very clear. This rig would make a great display of an Old West set up.
