FIRST YEAR Antique COLT “Lightning” .38 CLMR Rifle
Made in 1884
Here we present an antique Colt Lightning Slide Action Rifle in .38 CLMR, made in 1884, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever action was able to achieve.
This Colt Lighting features a 26-inch barrel that is chambered in .38 CLMR, a very capable cartridge that was Colt’s version of Winchester’s .38 WCF, different only in the weight of the powder charge. The top of the barrel is marked “38 Cal.” and “COLT’S PT.F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A./PATENTED MAY 29 SEPT 18.83”.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces have been cleaned bright. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is in very good condition with good rifling. The action on this rifle is excellent.
