Description:
SALE PENDING.       Remington No. 1 Sporting Rifle in .44-77 caliber. The .44-77 Sharps cartridge was first introduced in 1871 and was initially one of the most popular buffalo rounds with the bison market hunters for its extreme long range capabilities considered at the time.  This is an un-messed with gun. All parts are original. All metal and wood is original factory finish. Overall it is in VERY GOOD condition by NRA Antique Standards. Special order 30" barrel as 28" was standard. Desirable feature of the special order single-set trigger. The single-set no longer works, however, it is an easy fix by any competent gunsmith. The original trigger set-screw is in place. The trigger pull to fire is very positive, crisp, and smooth. It has a very desirable and rare period Remington Rough and Ready adjustable folding elevator rear peep sight for precise long range shooting that works perfectly. The front sight is a Mountain Sight design. The front blade is fashioned from a period U.S. silver coin. This is indicative of a frontier repair/replacement, further evidence that this was not used as a prized target rifle, but rather used on the frontier. The mortis slot for a standard field sight has been filled with a removeable iron dovetailed wedge.  Overall, the metal is smooth. The barrel and breech assembly have traces of original blue in protected areas, mixed with a predominant amount of aged bluing that has turned a grayish plum color. There is the expected amount of thinning and fading of the finish from field handling. The receiver shows mottled gray traces of the original case hardening. The wood is very solid and stable with no cracks or repairs.  The wood shows evidence of serious use, i.e. the stock having noticeable dings and dents, and the forearm having a slight reduction on the bottom between the screw and the receiver from saddle pommel wear and cross-stick use. The bore is great. The lands and grooves are strong and pronounced. It is only slightly frosted with no pitting. I would rate the bore at 9 on a 10 scale, and it should clean up even better.  The rifle was definitely used, but well cared for.  Overall it has character.  Two-line Remington address and patent date markings on the top tang. The usual Remington barrel markings on the top rib are covered up by the base of the Remington Rough and Ready peep sight. The edges and corners of the muzzle have the slight Remington factory beveled features, evidence that the length of the barrel is original and never altered. The action and trigger mechanics are great; tight as a drum and very smooth. The low serial number of 28XX is matching on the bottom tang and on the bottom barrel rib under the forearm. "44 CTGS S" (.44-77 Sharps) is clearly stamped on the bottom barrel rib forward of the forearm. The Remington No. 1 Sporting Rifles in the big buffalo calibers like this one are getting rarer as time goes on and hardly ever come up for sale.  This Sporting Rifle undoubtedly was used on the western frontier based upon the overall condition and wear patterns. Acceptable payment form is Certified Bank Cashier's Check only - no exceptions.  This is a long and very heavy rifle; about 11 pounds. Shipping and handling for $65.00 anywhere in the lower 48.  Alaska and Hawaii priced accordingly.  Full insurance is optional and priced at what the shipping server charges; to be determined after the based on the buyer's address.  I would strongly recommend insurance.   3-day inspection. Returned item must be in exactly the same condition as when buyer received it, and must not have been shot or dismantled. Buyer incurs return shipping costs. Call (909) 268-2346 if you have any questions.  Email request for more pics as this site will only allow for 15.
