Antique MILITIA FLINTLOCK Musket Marked “WB SAYER”
Engraved Early 19th Century Flintlock
Here we present an antique American Militia Flintlock Musket with “W.B. SAYER” stamped on the stock, made circa the early 1800s. While having no standard design, many of these long arms were generally patterned after British military muskets, such as the Brown Bess, but were of a lighter design. In this era, the importance of militia firearms as protection for individual rights and personal protection in a free state was recognized by the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. States contracted with various makers to equip their militias with a host of various muskets based on the state’s criteria resulting in a great variety of different guns.
This musket shares the bandless barrel design secured instead by pins along its length. There is a small initial placard just behind the barrel tang. The stock is full-length. The left side of the barrel is marked with small “VP” view and proof marks. The lock is marked “WARRANTED”. The right side of the butt stock and the underside of the stock around the trigger guard are marked “W.B. SAYER”.
The overall condition is good. The metal parts are dark with age. The markings are clear. The stock is in great shape with an attractive grain. The bore is smooth and dusty. There is a repair to the top of the barrel about 6-inches from the muzzle. The action is not currently functional.
