Description:
SALE PENDING If the photographs look familiar it is because this rifle was profiled in the "Custom Corner" section of Rifle, issue 208 in July/August of 2003.

This little gem started life as a sadly abused post-WW II European custom. My client purchased it and brought it to me for salvation. We agreed to keep the action with its original line engraving, double-set triggers, iron sights, sling swivel base, and claw mount bases. I began by installing a new Krieger 7mm barrel trimmed to 22 5/8" and turned to a light sporter contour. Since they were appropriate for the style of the rifle, I re-installed the original front sight ramp, sling swivel base and the rear ramp with its single fixed sight leaf. I swapped out the original bolt shroud for an FN streamlined shroud and extended the tang for a sliding tang safety that both blocks the sear and locks down the bolt. I welded on a new bolt handle with a checkered buffalo horn knob. Then I had to machine New England Custom Gun blank rings to fit the original claw bases and design a new release lever for the back base. The original action had the usual Mauser button-release floor plate so I welded on a front hinge and made a classic lever release with a detent button to hold it closed.
The client picked out an appropriately figured Turkish walnut blank that had plenty of natural reddish highlights with dark streaks running through the whole blank. After inletting the metal I contoured the outside profile in a European style with ebony forend tip, steel pistol grip cap and leather-covered recoil pad and two-screw inletted rear sling swivel base. To enhance the continental appearance, the cheekpiece has a n oval contour with double shadow lines and a reverse concave/convex shape which replaces the usual sharp edge with a soft curve. The plan was to keep the sharp edge from being damaged in the field. It seems to have worked since the rifle has made several hunts with no damage. To further add to the European flair I shaped a chin strap moulding behind the pistol grip and an oval inletted rear swivel base.

While the multiple-coat of hand-rubbed oil stock finish was filling and drying, I rust blued the metal and sent off the scope rings and grip cap to the now defunct Color Case Company for color case hardening. The small parts like screws and triggers were nitre blued for a bit of contrast. When the stock finish was done to my satisfaction, I checkered it 24 line per inch in a multi-point pattern with mullered borders.

Once the rifle was finally assembled and the Leupold Vari-X III 1.5-5X scope installed, it was off to the range where it turned in m.o.a. groups with factory ammo and even tighter groups with a couple selected handloads. When it came back to me for sale, I was concerned that it might be because it was no longer performing; however, that is not the case since it still shooting very well. The client says it has been crowded out of his heart by new acquisitions, some of which I have made for him. Oh well, his loss and some else's gain.
