Description:
SCARCE Antique MANHATTAN “HERO” Deringer Pistol

“Poor Man’s Deringer” Made Circa 1868

Here we present an antique Manhattan Arms “HERO” Percussion Deringer Pistol, made circa 1868-73 in Newark, New Jersey. Though these guns were not serial numbered, the total number produced was 5000. Known as a “Poor Man’s Deringer”, this gun is about 6” in length and has a 3” round barrel that screws into a brass frame. “HERO” is stamped into the left side of the brass frame. It is interesting that the “boot” or “pocket” pistol is believed to be the final production type made by the Manhattan Arms Company.

Manhattan Fire Arms Manufacturing Co. was founded by a group of New Jersey businessmen in 1856. Their goal was to take advantage of Colt’s patent for revolving firearms that was due to expire in 1857. The founders hired Thomas Bacon to become the Superintendent of Manufacturing. During their existence, Manhattan Firearms products approximately 175,000 pistols. Only Colt, Remington and Winchester produced more guns during this era which included the Civil War.

The overall condition is good. The metal has a smooth, even patina. The markings are clear and legible. The smooth bore is in good condition. The walnut grips show wear and the right grip has a crack. The action on this pistol is functional.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
