Description:
SIGNED Special-Order ANTIQUE Winchester 1892 Rifle

Second Year Model 1892 in .38-40 WCF!

Here we present a Special-Order Antique Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle in .38-40 WCF, made in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut, Signed “D.T. ACHORN”. Another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production from1892 through 1938 and produced upwards to 1,000,000 rifles. The Model 1892 was first chambered in .32-20, 38-40, and .44-40 cartridges, and in 1895 the 25-20 emerged. Many gun owners favored Winchester rifles for their ability to fire the same ammunition as their pistols, meaning that a cowboy, trapper or stagecoach defender could take along his trust rifle and pistol sidearm with only one supply of ammo!

This second year1892 Rifle is in a special-order configuration with a 24-inch octagonal barrel and half-length magazine tube. .38-40 WCF was a great cartridge that was in widespread use at the time. The name “D.T. ACHORN” is inscribed at the top of the breech end of the barrel. Records show that D.T. Achorn (David) was from Maine and attended Maine State College in Orono circa 1893. The Annual Report of the Maine State College for the Year 1894 refers to him as “Cadet D. T. Achorn” and states that his Cadet Company A was awarded the gold medal for marksmanship in 1893. This is a handy rifle that may well have been a gift to the young cadet as he entered his college program in military science.

The overall condition is fine. This rifle has been modestly refinished at some point and retains 90% of the blue finish. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in great condition. The bore is sharp and shiny. The action is excellent. Here is a very nice Winchester Model 1892 in a great cartridge with special order features and a neat provenance!
