Unique Conversion of SPRINGFIELD Trapdoor Rifle
To a .45 Caliber Muzzle-Loader
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1863, Converted to a Muzzle-Loading Rifle. After the American Civil War, the United States military was slow to adopt new technological advances in firearms and opted to retrofit their enormous surplus inventory of Model 1861 type muskets to fire cartridges. Many different types of conversions were conceived and implemented. This one is named for its inventor, Erskine S. Allin, Master Armorer for Springfield Armory.
Eventually, trapdoor rifles were built by Springfield Armory from the ground up. This is one such rifle. However, interestingly, this rifle was modified in reverse, going from a breech-loading rifle to a muzzle-loader. This rifle still bears the proofs on the left side of the barrel and the lock is from a Model 1863 musket. The bore has been made smooth.
The overall condition is good. The steel parts have a mix of blue and patina. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with the usual handling marks of a military rifle. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong.
