Description:
Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD Model 1879 TRAPDOOR Rifle

Indian Wars Era Rifle in .45-70 GOVT!

Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1884 by Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. The trapdoor was an invention of Erskine S. Allin of Springfield Armory at the end of the Civil War. The first were actually conversions of Civil War Rifle Muskets, but they were later manufactured as new in the trapdoor configuration. These were powerful rifles capable of connecting at long range, but they were single shot in a day when repeaters were becoming the norm. Despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.

This one is serial numbered in the later range of the Model 1879. The breech block is marked “US MODEL 1878”. The lock is marked “US SPRINGFIELD” next to a federal eagle. The left side of the stock bears the inspector cartouche dated “1884”. There is the circle “P” marking behind the trigger guard. The left side of the barrel shows all the proofs.

The overall condition is near fine. The steel bears 85% of its original blue finish. Case colors are strong. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape with a good amount of handling marks, which is to be expected of a 135-year-old military rifle. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic example of an Indian Wars trapdoor in the legendary .45-70 GOVT!
