Dated 1884 Antique SPRINGFIELD 1879 TRAPDOOR Rifle
Indian Wars Era Rifle in 45-70 GOVT
Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1879 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1884 by Springfield Armory in Massachusetts. The trapdoor was an invention of Erskine S. Allin of Springfield Armory at the end of the Civil War. The first were actually conversions of Civil War Rifle Muskets, but they were later manufactured as new in the trapdoor configuration. These were powerful rifles capable of connecting at long range, but they were single shot in a day when repeaters were becoming the norm. Despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War.
The breech block is marked “US MODEL 1878”. The lock is marked “US SPRINGFIELD” next to a federal eagle. The inspector cartouche on the left side of the stock is dated “1884”. There is a circle “P” behind the trigger guard.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces bear 85% of the original blue. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock is in fair condition, with a crack near the breech. The bore is in great shape. The action is excellent.
