Description:

ST. LOUIS Antique H.E. DIMICK & Co. PLAINS Rifle

Made Circa the 1850s in Saint Louis

Here we present an antique H.E. Dimick Half Stock Rifle, made circa the 1850s in St. Louis, Missouri. Horace Dimick was a contemporary of Jacob and Sam Hawken and a gun maker himself. He was born circa 1811 and raised in Vermont, then moved to Kentucky where, as a young man, he was a cabinet maker and upholsterer. At some point he began working as a gunsmith and by 1846 was well known nationally. He moved to Saint Louis, Missouri in 1849 and opened his shop with his brother in 1851 and continued until the early 1870s. Incidentally, 1849 was the year that Jacob Hawken perished during the cholera epidemic. Nevertheless, Horace competed with Jacob’s brother, Sam Hawken, as well as other well-known St. Louis gunmakers of the time such as the Folsoms and the Albrights. They all seem to have had a good working relationship in spite of the competition. During the Civil War, Dimick became nationally famous for providing the rifles for the elite sharpshooters of the 66th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment.

This is a good example of the sort of weaponry that was going West with adventurers and settlers prior to and during the American Civil War. St. Louis, being the “Gateway to the West” was a last stop for many getting supplies and equipment for the days and dangers ahead. This rifle is muzzle-loading and would have taken a .52 caliber ball. The barrel is part octagonal and transitions to round at about the mid-point. There is a faint marking that appears to be “LYONS” at the breech, which may be reference to a gunmaker in the Sioux Falls, Iowa area at this time. The lock is marked “H.E. DIMICK/St. LOUIS”.

The overall condition is good. The iron parts have an aged patina. The markings are mostly clear. The stock is in good shape. There is a minor repair behind the hammer and another at the bottom of the stock where the support hand would go. The bore is untouched and a bit caked at the moment. The action is functional though a bit anemic. If you want a gun like the settlers would have used for putting meat on the table and defending the wagons and homestead, look no further!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 31-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .52 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
