Description:
This is a neat old Spanish Military Astra Model 400 (Model of 1921) that was made in 1929. It is NOT import marked but has been refinished at some point in the last 90 years, our guess would be at least 40 plus years ago. This Astra appears to be in perfect working order and comes with 2 magazines (one factory original, one aftermarket?). This Astra is chambered in the 9mm Largo cartridge, a much more powerful round than the 9mm Luger cartridge. As you can see the slide is marked 9mm & .38, this is because it was also designed to function with .38 ACP, 9mm Luger, 9mm Browning Long, and 9mm Steyr if in a pinch. This gave the Astra 400 real versatility then and now today, with all of this various ammunition available to some degree. It served the Spanish Military well for more than 30 years between 1921 and the mid-1950's, when it was finally replaced. During it's Spanish service it proved to be well-made, reliable, and accurate. If not for the average ergonomics of the straight grip and the desire to go to a NATO standard cartridge it might have stayed in service even longer. This particular 1929 example is a good looking gun for a refinish. Whomever did the re-blue did a good job of leaving all of the factory stampings intact. The bore in this Astra is good to average, with very minor pitting in the grooves but nice well-defined lands. All of the controls are in working order and the action still goes into battery with authority. It should make an excellent shooter and interesting collector piece for the next owner.
