Description:
SOLD.......Make this rare beautiful Antique Rifle part of your advance collection!
This is 1 OF THE 500 "E.N." marked ARGENTINE Infantry Mauser IG Mod 71 made by OWG at Steyr purchased by the BUENOS AIRES Province; Single Shot Bolt Action 11.1mm cal, 33" barrel in excellent shape; well documented by Ralph Cobb's article as well as Eduardo's Fontenla's and also mentioned in the book "Bayonetas de la Republica Argentina" and "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by George Lyman.

Form my personal collection. The IG 71 Steyr manufactured is the most rare variety, as the IG 71 marked "Spandau" and "Amberg" are the most commonly encountered. The Mod.71 is the first rifle firing metallic center fire cartridges produced on an assembly line basis. This I.G. (InfanterieGewehr) Mod 71 was manufactured in 1875 by OWG (Oesterreichische Waffenfabriks-Gesellschaft) at Steyr. The rebellious province of Buenos Aires purchased 500 Mauser I.G. Mod71 rifles from Steyr. After the federal army put down the rebellion, these Mausers were reissued to loyal national guard units.

Special note about the "E.N." marking as a distinguishing characteristic:

The "E.N." marking means EJERCITO NACIONAL . The rifle exhibits the "E.N." marking on the top part of the hexagon barrel after the OEWG marking forward the receiver as well as a matching "E.N." cartouche shown on the right side buttstock. I had observed the same exact "E.N." marking on the 1891 Mauser rifle receiver (under the bolt stop-release), a very few I.G. 71 (OWG) as well as a few 1871 Argentine Remington Rolling Block Rifles and Carbines and one bayonet; although there is also documentation of the "E.N." marking on a I.G. 71 Amberg as well as on a few Argentine Grass and Werndl rifles. More documentation about the "E.N." marking can be found in the book "Bayonetas de la Republica Argentina" by Albino and Sufriti; the book "Remington Rolling Block Military Rifles of the World" by George Lyman, articles by Eduardo Fontenla and by Ralph Cobb.
Interesting note about rifling and ammo: The depth of the rifling grooves in the I.G.Mod.71 is double the depth of the I.G.Mod.71/84; meaning that reloaders should expect ammunition designed for I.G.Mod.71 to perform much better than ammo for the I.G.Mod.71/84.
Condition: Excellent condition showing well defined markings, the highly Gothic script bearing: I.G. (InfanterieGewehr) Mod. 71 on the left side rear receiver; there is a Monarch's Cypher which could be F.W. (Fredrik Wilhelm of Prussia), on the barrel the top flat is marked "OEWG; E.N."
Except for the bolt locking screw and the buttplate; the rifle has ALL matching serial numbers. Metal finish in great condition with bluing loss mixed with even pleasing patina, toning aging spots throughout.. Usual scratches, handling marks but NO PITTING, NO RUST noted above woodline; a couple of tiny freckles seen under the sn on a barrel band. The bolt and receiver in the white as it should be. Brass trigger guard with little toning even patina. Bolt with the same patina described matching other medal parts showing the face WITHOUT a ring around the firing pin hole.
For a black powder rifle, the BORE is in Excellent condition, smooth, bright with strong rifling, just a couple small opaque spots. Because of the rifling, condition of the bore and the condition of the bolt face this rifle appears to be fire very little. Front barrel band has the bayonet lug provision. Rifle includes the original cleaning rod. Stock has original finish with NO CRCAKS, NO GAUGES, NO CHIPS, but some normal handling marks, dings, scratches, tiny bruises throughout. It shows nice deep cartouches-inspection marks . Right side buttstock has the "E.N." cartouche matching the "E. N." marking on the barrel with an additional carved upside down "E".

An EXTREMELY RARE ARGENTINE 1875 Mauser IG 71 OWG-Steyr with the "E.N." marking and cartouche; MATCHING NUMBERS in great shape that will make an OUSTANDING advance addition to your Mauser collection.
