SPENCER 1865 Carbine BURNSIDE Contract Civil War
Antique Saddle Ring Carbine Made in Providence, RI
Here we present a Burnside Rifle Co. 1865 Contract Model Spencer Carbine, manufactured circa 1865. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales. On June 27, 1864, the Burnside Rifle Co. entered into a contract with the Ordnance Dept. to manufacture about 30,500 Spencer Model carbines with deliveries completed by Aug. 31, 1865. With the changes directed to be made to the carbines, deliveries did not start until April 15, 1865, and they continued until the end of October, with 30,496 M1865 Spencer carbines being delivered. In total, the Burnside Company made just over 34,000 of this carbine. They paid Spencer Repeating Rifle Co. a royalty of 50 cents for each of the 30,496 carbine delivered to the Ordnance Dept., and $1 was paid for the 3,500 Spencer carbines sold to individuals and civilians. This Burnside Contract Model 1865 is a great example of a weapon used by the US Federal Cavalry after the close of the Civil War and would make a great addition to highlight any military display or rifle collection!
This specimen is one of the Burnside Contract, making it scarcer than those made by the Spencer Repeating Rifle Company. The top of the frame is marked “SPENCER REPEATING RIFLE/PAT’D MARCH 6, 1860/MANUP’D AT PROV. R.I./BY BURNSIDE RIFLE CO. 1865”. It is equipped with a very nice leather sling.
The overall condition is good. The iron shows a very even dark brown patina. All markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock in great shape. Bore is shiny and the rifling is sharp. The cartridge keeper is absent. The action is excellent.
