Description:

“1745” Dated EUROPEAN Antique FLINTLOCK Pistol

High Relief Engraved with Mask on the Pommel

Here we present an antique European Flintlock Pistol, made circa 1745 very likely in France. This pistol is full sized and could have been carried in a belt and certainly in a saddle holster on a horse. Unlike many other martial pistols, however, this one is very finely decorated with beautiful engravings, carvings, and cast brass hardware. Beginning at the brass pommel we have a grotesque mask or face surrounded by a linked border. Human figures are visible on the sides as the pommel cap tapers up the grip. Trigger guard has a nice finial and is engraved with a likeness of feathered plumage. The back of the wrist bears a brass medallion with two men flanking a creature’s face. The left side of the stock features a very ornate side plate that appears almost lacy. Two humanlike figures appear seated. The iron lock, hammer, and frizzen are all engraved with distinct designs. The front of the lock under the frizzen spring is engraved with “TXAA 1745” which is a maker’s mark. The top of the barrel is deeply engraved with implements of war. The stock engraving is most apparent as the wrist transitions from the medallion to the barrel tang, as well as from the trigger guard to the ramrod tube. This is one of those pieces that is just as much art as weapon.

The overall condition is fine. The iron surfaces have an even gray patina. The brass has a mellow patina with traces of verdigris throughout. The markings are clear. The stock is in great shape. The bore is smooth and in very good shape. The action is excellent. Here is a gorgeous piece of firearms history!
