1941 Dated WWII British ENFIELD MK I* .38 Revolver
Standard Sidearm for British Forces in WWII
Here we present a World War II British Enfield No. 2 MK I* Top Break Revolver in .38 S&W, made circa 1941 in England. The No. 2 was the most prevalent sidearm amongst British officers, NCOs and tankers during World War II. The original design came from Webley & Scott around the end of World War I, though initially, production was given to the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. Essentially, the British government tried to steal W&S’s design and make them in-house until Enfield couldn’t keep up and Webley & Scott was contracted to produce as well. Those produced by Enfield were known as the No. 2 MK I. In about 1938 thACe MK I* was introduced and these were built from the ground up as double action only revolvers with no hammer spur, and most of the original MK Is were converted as they rotated through the armory. This change was to prevent hammer spurs from snagging on clothing when soldiers needed them most.
This example was made in 1941. It features wooden grips, the Enfield marking on the right side of the frame as well as a 1941 date. This was one of those made from the ground up as a MK I*. It is littered with British proof and acceptance marks. The cylinder is marked “E.S.C. 321” which is for the English Steel Company and the batch number.
The overall condition is fine. The original finish is 85% complete. The markings are clear and legible. The grips are in good shape with the wear you would expect. The bore is excellent: bright and shiny with strong rifling. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic piece of British WWII history! These are something not often seen on the US market!
