Description:

RARE J. H. RECTOR Syracuse, NEW YORK Rifle c 1850

Half Stock Percussion

Here we present an antique J.H. Rector Half Stock Percussion Target Rifle, made circa 1850 by John H. Rector. John Rector was a local gunsmith in Syracuse, NY who produced high quality firearms from the 1830’s through the 1860’s. Rector’s specialty was heavy percussion target rifles and somewhat lighter plains rifles for westward expansion. A historical directory from 1850 shows that his gun making business was located on Water Street in Syracuse. This is a very nice target rifle from a well-known New York State gun maker!

The top of the barrel is marked “J.H. RECTOR/SYRACUSE/467”, referencing that the serial number of this rifle is actually 467. The lock is marked “C. BAKER”. It has scroll engravings on the breech, tang, and lock with two German silver insets of an eagle and a prairie chicken. It also features double set triggers along with a finely checkered deluxe walnut stock with German silver wedge escutcheons as well as a pewter fore end cap. The front and rear sight are adjustable with the front sight having markers for windage adjustment.

The overall condition is very good. The iron parts are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock has fantastic grain and has a stable crack at the toe. The front ramrod tube has come loose but could be reattached. The bore is clean with clear rifling. The action is crisp and excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 32-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .38 Percussion
