Description:
MLE 1866 French Military 11mm bolt action rifle. Original rifle, unaltered, dated 1872. This scarce rifle utilized a needle firing pin that was released through the center of the bolt when the trigger was depressed. A gas seal, still intact, held the chamber pressure while driving a 45 caliber bullet. The cartridges are cloth or paper attached to the lead bullet with a percussion cap that ignited the powder charge. This design was the grandaddy of the metallic cartridge rifle. The stock is European walnut that still has the original cartouche and serial number intact. The stock has various inspectors marks and has never been sanded or refinished. The barrel retains about 85% of the original rust blue finish. The bore is bright and shinny. Rifling is sharp. Barrel, receiver, bolt, and stock are all matched numbered. Have a bayonet with the brass hilt not shown that is available.
