Description:
General Specs: Ithaca, Year 1941, 10 Gauge, 10 1/2lbs
Serial Number: 500921

Ithaca’s “NEW ITHACA DOUBLE” or NID, succeeded the long-running Flues Model (1909-1926) coming out in 1926 and running through 1949 when Ithaca Gun Co. discontinued American made side x side shotguns.  One of the most rare and interesting NID guns was the Ithaca 10 Gauge Magnum that was a collaboration between the Winchester-Western Cartridge company and Lou Smith, one if Ithaca’s primaries.  Spencer Olin of Winchester had developed a 3 ½” magnum 10ga. that would propel 2oz. of shot at high speed but could not find a gun that could handle the load.  Lou Smith and his plant managers knew they could produce such a gun, and that was the beginning of this 10 1/2lb. behemoth side x side.  Only Parker and Ithaca produced a side x side that could handle the 3 ½” magnum load and both are Parker and Ithaca Magnums are extremely rare.  They only made 887 Magnums in all grades, with only 164 produced in this grade, the Grade 2E.  This gun, sn500921 made in 1941, is super rare in numbers, but is also rare in that it RETAINS 98% VIVID FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION, WITH 99.9% VIVID CASE COLOR, 97% BARREL BLUE, AND 99% TRIGGER GUARD BLUE.  Even the wood finish is excellent and factory original with only light field use evident, and not a crack or split anywhere.  This is an amazing find!  The 32” barrels have full/full chokes, tight ribs, mirror bores, are tight on the hinge pin and breech face like a new gun.  The minimum wall thickness is over 70 thousandths…a monster gun.  It is a rare experience to even see one of these guns, but in this condition it is a real treasure.  This is not a gun to take upland hunting, with the exception of blocking for pheasants.  This is the ultimate long range waterfowler, built for pass shooting ducks, blasting geese, and would take a turkey’s head clean off at 70 yards.  For those who participate in the vintage side x side events, this is the long-range competitor that will take the trophy if you do your part.  The Ithaca NID is a great value in investment quality vintage American side x sides and are positioned to give the best increase of value of any of the big 5 makers of the past.  Look at the highly figured wood, the fancy checkering, the gorgeous engraving…it all comes together to make a great and special gun.  You will not likely see another one like this in your lifetime, so don’t miss out on this one.  Thanks for looking!
