NICE Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1873 TRAPDOOR Rifle
The Original .45-70 GOVT Made Circa July 1875
Here we present an antique Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured circa July 1875. This was the first trapdoor Springfield to be chambered for the powerful and famous .45-70 GOVT cartridge. The trapdoor rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba.
This one was made the year before Custer led his 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn. It comes with a rare, original leather sling by E. A. Crossman of Newark, New Jersey, a military contractor for leather goods during the Civil War and later. The lock is marked “EAGLE/US/SPRINGFIELD/1873”. The top of the butt plate is marked “US” and “2”. There are proof marks on the left side of the barrel, “V”, “P” and an Eagle Head. The left side of the stock bears a cartouche with the initials “ESA” for Erskine S. Allin, the inventor of the trapdoor conversions used on Civil War muskets the preceded this model. The Circle “P” mark is behind the trigger guard.
The overall condition is near fine. The breech block is beautifully case colored. The blue on the barrel has turned dark over the years. The markings are clear and legible. The walnut stock shows use and remains solid. The bore is in good condition with sharp rifling. The action is excellent, strong and crisp.
