Description:
Westley Richards boxlock double barrel Express Rifle chambered in .470 Nitro Express.
One of the oldest, best known and most popular calibers for dangerous game the .470 NE is proofed for 75 grains of Cordite and a 500 grain bullet in a 3 ¼” case. This rifle was built by Westley Richards between 1908 – 1910 and was completely refinished at some time. It bears WRA, Springfield, MO import marks which indicates that it was imported during the tenure of the Westley Richards Agency while it was in Missouri.
Mechanically the rifle is first rate; fine bores in the 26” barrels, great/solid lock-up and crisp double triggers and extractors. Extractors are more common on dangerous game guns than ejectors...It seems that when you are staring into the face of an animal that wants to stomp you into the ground (or worse) it is a good idea to have something, like extractors, that are ultimately dependable. Apparently there were a few occasions where ejectors failed!!
Mounted on the top of the barrels is a rear sight system that has a standing 100 yard blade, a folding 200, a folding 300 and a folding "ladder" sight for long distances! The stock has a 14 ½” LOP over a solid “English” style recoil pad. Right hand cheek piece on the handsomely grained stock. Both the stock and forearm are in 98% finish condition with sharp checkering and excellent wood to metal fit..no cracks or damage. As mentioned above, all of the metal has been refinished: The barrels, floor plate, forearm iron and trigger guard pieces have been blacked and the frame greyed. The frame is factory engraved with tigers on each side as was customary for WR in this era. The results of some old, shallow spots of pitting can be seen in places “under” the newer finishes. Still a fine functioning, classic dangerous game double from one of the best makers ever! Weighs 11 pounds.
