“PRAT” Marked SPANISH FLINTLOCK Miquelet Pistol
Late 18th Century Miquelet Belt Pistol
Here we present an antique Spanish Miquelet Flintlock Pistol, made circa the late 1700s. A “Miquelet” is a type of flintlock developed in Spain. The pistol has nice engraving on the brass features throughout and features a maker marked barrel. There is an engraved ghoulish face on the pommel.
Joan (Juan) Prat was an active gunmaker circa 1780 in Ripoll, a Gerona province in the eastern Spanish Pyrenees, about 20 miles south of the French border. The Prat family has a long history of gun making in Ripoll. In Dr. James D. Lavin’s “A History of Spanish Firearms”, he talks about an M. Prat who was an active gun and lock maker beginning in 1675 and continuing until the middle of the 18th century. There is a 1686 three-barreled gun with his marking on it in the Museo Arqueolégico Nacional, Madrid, Spain.
The overall condition is good. The iron and brass surfaces have an aged patina. The markings and engravings are clear. The walnut stock remains in good shape with a couple immobile splits on the left side. Otherwise solid. The ramrod has been lost with time. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong.
