This gun has been identified as having been issued to a member of the 7th Indiana Cavalry, one William Curtis of Company A. It is listed by serial number, 12767, as issued to him, along with several other Merril Carbines in the same 12,000 serial range. Copies of these archival records accompany the gun. It has obviously seen considerable use but is still in good working order. The 7th Indiana was one of seven different state cavalry units in the Union Army that were issued Merrill Carbines. A total of 14,495 were manufactured. William Curtis resided in Porter County Indiana, and enlisted in Augus 24, 1863 as a Private. He survived and was discharged on July 22nd, 1865.
