NAPOLEONIC French Antique AN XIII Flintlock Pistol
Cavalry Pistol Made “1808” at St. Etienne
Here we present an antique French AN IX/XIII Flintlock Cavalry Pistol, made in 1808 at the armory at St. Etienne in France. “Without cavalry battles are without result,” is one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s famous quotes. One of the greatest military commanders of his time, Napoleon changed how future wars were to be fought. He relied on his professional army to move swiftly and decisively. He was also able to successfully coordinate artillery, infantry, and cavalry in a way that was unprecedented at the time. Specifically concerning his cavalry troops, Napoleon favored supporting his cavalry charges with horse artillery, which were extremely mobile and made up for a lack of firepower against the infantry while the cavalry moved in with their sabers. As the battle went on, the infantry tended to become less organized, especially if retreating, and Napoleon liked to capitalize on the disorder to turn what might have been a tactical victory into a strategic victory by causing further casualties. Cavalry was also used in the traditional roles of foraging, reconnaissance, and skirmishing.
This pistol is marked “Mre Imp de St. Etienne” on the lock. There is an inspector’s mark “J” as well. On the top of the barrel tang is marked “Mle AN 9”. The barrel is marked “C 1808” and the right side of the stock is marked “C B 1808”. The iron and brass hardware all bear various small inspector and acceptance markings, mostly “CROWN/P”. This pistol would have been made originally as an AN IX model in 1808 and was shortly after made into the AN XIII model. This pistol features original iron belt hook and ramrod.
The overall condition is fine. The overall patina is dark with a layer of protectant that may be removed at the collector’s discretion. The markings are legible. The walnut stock shows some handling marks from the period and is solid with no cracks. The bore is smooth and patinated similarly to the exterior of the barrel. The action is strong and excellent. Here is a wonderful piece of Napoleonic history!
