The bore does have medium pitting and wear, along with some light scale the entire length, but often times such bores will still shoot very well as long as the rifling is good enough to spin the bullet and the muzzle is not “funneled” due to improper use of a steel cleaning rod. Hopefully this old rifle will spin a bullet well and be reasonably accurate to 75-100 yards, but again, that’s just a somewhat educated guess on my part since I have not shot it to make a definitive judgement. The exterior is adeep mottled brown patina with G-VG markings and the metal has scattered light surface crustiness and light pitting over much of the exposed areas. The forearm wood shows “dishing wear” from being carried over the saddle and the typical bumps and dings of 137 years of use, but is pretty much the average for what one usually sees on a Model ’73 in this overall condition. It has a period replaced percussion style tall non-adjustable buckhorn rear sight and standard Winchester “pinched blade” front sight. The replaced buckhorn sight looks to have been with this old rifle most or all of it’s very long life and was possibly done by some old-timer who was used to shooting one of these fixed non-adjustable rear sights on an earlier percussion half-stock Plains Rifle. For sure this old ‘73 has a story to tell ….but unfortunately that story has now been lost to the decades of time. Nothing special here, just a well-used “cowboy western looking” no-finish ’73 About G-VG. $1995 SOLD Antique: Yes |
