FINE, LETTERED Winchester Model 1912 RIOT Shotgun
WWI Production Made 1917!
Here we present a Winchester 1912 Riot Shotgun, made on April 27, 1917 per the accompanying Cody Letter. The Model 1912 (later shortened to “Model 12” in 1919) was the next step from the Winchester Model 1897 hammer-fired shotgun which had evolved from the earlier Winchester Model 1893. The Model 12 was designed by Winchester engineer T.C. Johnson and was based in part on the M1893/97 design by John M. Browning, in that it used a sliding forearm or pump action to cycle the mechanism. The Model 12 and various versions of it were used in World War I, World War II, Korea and the early part of the Vietnam War, until inventory was exhausted after the Model 12’s initial production ceased in 1964.
This example has many indications of having served in either military or law enforcement. it includes its original leather duty sling which is marked “W. Co. 1917”. Both sides of the stock have “450” stenciled in white paint. “D29” is stamped on the right stock. The left side of the barrel is marked “TRADE MARK/NICKEL STEEL-WINCHESTER-MOD. 912-12 GA./REG. IN U S PAT. OFF & FGN.” The right side of the barrel is marked “MANUFACTURED BY THE WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT U.S.A. PAT.JULY/21.1896.FEB.22.JUNE 14.1898.SEPT.7.1909.MAY 17.24.31.JUNE 7.14.28.JULY 5.12.1910.JULY 22.1913.”
The overall condition is fine. About 80% of the original blue finish remains. The markings are clear and legible. The bore is bright. The stock is in very good condition. The action on this shotgun is excellent. Here is a very nice and lettered Model 12 Riot for your collection!
